Van Gogh Museum: tickets, hours and how to visit
Almond Blossom, Sunflowers and The Potato Eaters are always on view. Pick your start time, check the hours and plan your visit.
In short
- Every visit to the Van Gogh Museum has a start time. You choose it when you book, and tickets are sold online only, so book before you go. You can arrive up to 30 minutes after your time, but never before it.
- The museum is open every day. From 2 November 2026 it opens at 9:00 and closes at 17:00, and on Fridays it stays open until 21:00. The full list of dates is on the opening hours page.
- You can choose the entry ticket, a 2-hour guided tour, a small-group tour with no more than 8 guests, or a ticket that adds a canal cruise. The entry ticket covers the permanent collection and the temporary exhibitions.
- Most visits take two to three hours, with the café and the shop. Photos are fine without flash. Video, tripods and selfie sticks are not allowed.
The largest Van Gogh collection in the world

Almond Blossom, Sunflowers and The Potato Eaters are always on view. Almond Blossom (1890) is the soft one: white and pink branches against a pale blue sky. The Potato Eaters (1885) is the opposite, a dark room where a peasant family eats around a table by lamplight.
Most of the other works rotate, so the paintings on the walls can change from one visit to the next. Starry Night is not here: it hangs at MoMA in New York.
A museum designed for one painter
The Dutch government commissioned the building from the architect Gerrit Rietveld in 1963. Rietveld died a year later, and the museum opened on 2 June 1973. In 1999 an exhibition wing by Kisho Kurokawa was added next to the main building.
From September 2012 to May 2013 the museum was closed for renovation.
Which ticket for the Van Gogh Museum?
Short on time? The entry ticket is enough. Want the story of Vincent's life told as you walk? Take the 2-hour guided tour. Prefer a small group where you can ask questions? Choose the tour for no more than 8 guests. Planning a day in the centre? The ticket with a canal cruise covers both.
